Getting an older parent around Montréal: the options
STM paratransit (transport adapté) is door to door but only for people whose disability seriously limits their mobility; age alone doesn't qualify. For a parent who is mobile but shouldn't drive, or needs to get to an appointment, the airport or family on time, the usual choices are a taxi, an adapted taxi, or a private chauffeur booked ahead with the same pickup plan every time.
STM paratransit: who qualifies
- A deficiency causing a significant and persistent disability, and limited mobility: for example, unable to walk 400 m on level ground, unable to climb a 35 cm step alone, or unable to make a whole trip on regular transit. STM
- Eligibility is decided under Québec's admission policy; there's no age criterion. STM
- Booking: online up to 7 days ahead, or by phone at 514-280-8211 (option 1), 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Same-day requests by phone only, if resources allow. STM
- Visiting from outside Québec: available only to visitors who use a wheelchair at all times, booked by phone. STM
At the airport
- Adapted taxis are available 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. through the dispatcher at door 23 (arrivals). ADM
- ADM offers assistance from the arrivals hall to the pickup area; book it online or at 514-420-5030. Electric carts run from the gate to the customs hall. ADM
When a private car fits better
- Your parent is mobile but shouldn't drive, and doesn't qualify for paratransit.
- The appointment time is fixed and you want the same pickup plan every time.
- You book and pay from another city, and want confirmation that the ride happened.
- Tell the company exactly what help is needed (walker, folding wheelchair in the trunk, door-to-door) before booking, and ask what they can and can't do.
